Taconite Harbor Unit 1

Lakehead Constructors was designated by Minnesota Power as the Lead Contractor to complete the second of three environmental upgrades at the Taconite Harbor Energy Center during the spring of 2008. Construction activities included providing logistic support, safety training and leadership, construction equipment scheduling, meeting coordination, and direct supervision for LCI trades.

The environmental upgrade included installing over-fire ducting, solid and liquid injection points in the boiler; precipitator overhaul and precipitator duct change-out from a hot side ESP to a cold side ESP; and electrical and mechanical outage activities. At the peak, over 300 contracted personnel were working two shifts on the outage. Over 100,000 man-hours were worked on the outage without a lost-time incident. Unit 1 was restarted on the scheduled date.
